STUDENT LAPTOP ACCESS PROGRAM (SLAP)

Our mission is to raise funds to provide sponsored (free) laptops to Kingston and area secondary school students who need them to learn and reach their full potential.

MEET GABRIEL!

SLAP! was founded by Gabriel Bergeron, a high school student in the Computer Science Specialist Program at Bayridge Secondary School.

Gabriel noticed that some students were falling behind in school because they did not own computers, and decided to do something about it.

THE DIGITAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

Teachers post classwork, instructions, assignments, due dates, and more on digital platforms (ex. Minds Online)
Students engage with academic resources online (ex. Khan Academy and other tutoring sites)
Online research is expected in secondary school
Students collaborate on shared digital documents and projects
Communication with teachers and peers takes place digitally
Students connect socially through their online student community
Students apply for summer jobs and complete university applications online
Digital Literacy is an essential skill
School "loaner" laptops are frequently underpowered, unavailable, or broken, and often cannot be accessed except for short periods while at school.

We are proud to source all of our laptops from ReBOOT Canada, a registered charity that, for the past 30 years, has provided new and/or refurbished computers to low-income applicants.
